Introduction to Florida Driving

Lesson 2

Your Responsibilities as a Driver

A driver's license is not just permission to drive — it's a promise that you will follow the rules and keep everyone safe.

What You Must Always Carry

When driving, you must always have three things: your valid driver's license, proof of insurance (also called financial responsibility), and your vehicle registration. If a police officer asks for these and you cannot show them, you can get a ticket.

Insurance Is Required

Florida law requires every vehicle to have insurance. The minimum is $10,000 for Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 for Property Damage Liability (PDL). Driving without insurance can result in your license being suspended.

Seatbelts Save Lives

Florida law requires the driver and all front-seat passengers to wear seatbelts. Children under 5 must be in a car seat or booster seat. If you are pulled over for another violation, you can also get a seatbelt ticket.

Never Drive Impaired

It is illegal to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you are 21 or older, the legal limit is 0.08% BAC (blood alcohol content). If you are under 21, the limit is 0.02%. Penalties include fines, jail time, and losing your license.

Real World Examples
💡 You get pulled over for a broken taillight. The officer asks for your license, registration, and insurance. If you left your insurance card at home, you could get a fine — keep a copy in the car or on your phone.
💡 Your friend offers you a ride home after a party but you notice they've been drinking. The safe choice is to call a rideshare or another friend.
Common Mistakes
⚠ Thinking you only need insurance when you drive — your vehicle must be insured at all times, even when parked.
⚠ Believing rear-seat passengers don't need seatbelts — while Florida only requires front-seat belts for adults, it's always safer for everyone to buckle up.
