Road Signs

Lesson 3

Warning Signs — Danger Ahead

Warning signs don't tell you what to do. They tell you what's coming — and give you time to prepare.

Curve and Turn Warnings

A yellow diamond with a curved arrow means a curve ahead. A sharp turn sign shows a more dramatic change in direction. Speed advisory signs (yellow squares below the diamond) suggest a safe speed for the curve. If the sign says 25 mph, that means 25 mph is the fastest you should go around that curve.

Intersection and Merge Warnings

Cross-shaped warnings mean an intersection ahead. A T-shaped sign means the road ends and you must turn left or right. A Y-shaped sign warns of a fork in the road. Merge signs (two arrows joining) mean traffic from another road is about to join yours — check your mirrors.

Pedestrian and Animal Crossings

A yellow diamond with a person walking warns of a pedestrian crossing. A sign with a deer silhouette means deer frequently cross in that area — be especially alert at dawn and dusk. School crossing signs show two children and mean slow down and watch for kids.

Road Condition Warnings

Slippery when wet signs warn that the road surface gets dangerous in rain. Bump or dip signs mean the road surface is uneven. Divided highway begins/ends signs warn of a change in road layout. Low clearance signs warn that a bridge or overpass ahead has limited height — trucks must pay special attention.

Real World Examples
💡 You see a curve warning with a 35 mph advisory plate. You're going 55. If you don't slow down before the curve, you could skid off the road — the advisory speed is there because drivers have crashed at that curve before.
💡 You're driving on a rural highway at dusk and see a deer crossing sign. Five minutes later, a deer jumps out. Because you were alert and driving slower, you stop in time.
Common Mistakes
⚠ Ignoring speed advisory plates below curve signs — these are based on real crash data at that specific curve.
⚠ Thinking warning signs are only in rural areas — they appear everywhere, including cities and highways.
