Traffic Signals

Lesson 1

Traffic Light Colors — Red, Yellow, Green

Everyone knows red means stop and green means go. But what does yellow really mean? And can you ever turn on red?

Steady Red Light

A steady red light means STOP. You must come to a complete stop behind the stop line. Stay stopped until the light turns green. Right turn on red: in Florida, you may turn right on a steady red light AFTER coming to a complete stop AND yielding to all pedestrians and traffic. But if a sign says "NO TURN ON RED," you must wait for green.

Steady Yellow Light

A steady yellow light means the signal is about to turn red. It does NOT mean speed up! If you can stop safely before the intersection, you must stop. If you are already in the intersection or too close to stop safely, proceed through carefully. Running a red light because you tried to "beat the yellow" is one of the most common causes of intersection crashes.

Steady Green Light

A steady green light means you may go through the intersection IF the way is clear. Green does not mean "go blindly." You must still yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk and to vehicles already in the intersection. Always check left, right, and left again before entering an intersection on green.

Flashing Signals

A flashing red light means the same as a STOP sign — come to a complete stop, then proceed when safe. A flashing yellow light means slow down and proceed with caution. Flashing signals are often used at intersections late at night or when normal signals are not working.

Real World Examples
💡 The light turns yellow as you approach the intersection at 45 mph. You're 200 feet away. You have time to stop safely — so you stop. The car behind you honks, but you made the right and legal choice.
💡 You want to turn right on red. You stop completely, check for pedestrians and oncoming traffic from the left. The way is clear, so you turn right. This is legal in Florida.
Common Mistakes
⚠ Treating a yellow light as a signal to speed up — it means prepare to stop.
⚠ Not coming to a complete stop before turning right on red.
⚠ Going on green without checking the intersection is clear — other drivers may run their red light.
Key Takeaways
✔ Red = stop completely. Yellow = stop if you can. Green = go if clear.
✔ Right turn on red is legal in FL after a full stop, unless signed otherwise.
✔ Flashing red = stop sign. Flashing yellow = caution.
✔ Always check the intersection even on a green light.
