Regulatory signs are not suggestions. They are the law. Break them and you get a ticket — or worse.
STOP and YIELD
A red octagon means STOP. You must come to a complete stop at the stop line, crosswalk, or before entering the intersection. A red-and-white inverted triangle means YIELD — slow down and be ready to stop for traffic that has the right of way. Rolling through a STOP sign without fully stopping is illegal.
Speed Limit Signs
White rectangular signs with black numbers show the maximum legal speed. You must not exceed this speed even if traffic around you is going faster. In school zones, the speed limit drops to 20 mph when children are present. In construction zones, fines are doubled.
DO NOT ENTER and WRONG WAY
A red-and-white DO NOT ENTER sign means you cannot go that direction. You will usually see it at highway off-ramp exits. A WRONG WAY sign confirms you are going against traffic. If you see either of these, stop immediately and turn around safely. Going the wrong way on a highway is extremely dangerous.
ONE WAY, NO TURN, and Lane Control
A ONE WAY sign (black arrow on white) tells you traffic flows in only one direction. NO LEFT TURN and NO U-TURN signs have a red circle with a line through the action. A red circle with a line always means that action is prohibited. Keep Right signs mean you must pass to the right of an obstacle or median.
Real World Examples
💡 You approach a STOP sign at an empty intersection late at night. No cars anywhere. You still must come to a complete stop — red light cameras and patrol officers often watch these intersections.
💡 You accidentally turn onto a one-way street and see a WRONG WAY sign. Don't panic. Safely pull to the side, stop, and then carefully turn around.
Common Mistakes
⚠ Rolling through STOP signs without a full stop — this is called a "rolling stop" and is illegal in Florida.
⚠ Thinking speed limit signs show a "suggested" speed — they show the legal maximum.
