Passing Other Vehicles

Lesson 1

Passing Other Vehicles Safely

Passing puts you in the lane of oncoming traffic. Do it wrong and you're in a head-on collision. Do it right and it's one of the safest maneuvers on the road.

When You May Pass

You may pass another vehicle on the left when: the center line is broken (dashed) on your side; you can see far enough ahead to pass safely; there is no oncoming traffic close enough to be a danger; you are NOT in a no-passing zone. On multi-lane roads, passing is done by changing to the left lane — no need to cross into oncoming traffic.

How to Pass Safely

Steps for a safe pass: 1) Check ahead — make sure you can see at least a third of a mile (about 1,600 feet) of clear road. 2) Check mirrors and blind spot. 3) Signal left. 4) Move into the passing lane. 5) Accelerate quickly — spend as little time as possible in the oncoming lane. 6) Signal right and return to your lane when you can see the passed vehicle's headlights in your rearview mirror. Do NOT cut back in too soon.

When You Must NOT Pass

Never pass: when the center line is solid on your side; on a hill or curve where you can't see oncoming traffic; at an intersection or railroad crossing; in a school zone; when a vehicle ahead has stopped for a pedestrian; when a "DO NOT PASS" or "NO PASSING ZONE" sign is posted. A pennant-shaped sign (triangle pointing right) on the LEFT side of the road marks a no-passing zone.

Being Passed

When another vehicle is passing you: maintain your speed or slow down slightly to let them pass faster. Do NOT speed up when being passed — this is dangerous and illegal. Move to the right side of your lane to give them more room. If someone is passing you unsafely, slow down and let them complete the pass.

Real World Examples
💡 You're behind a slow-moving tractor on a two-lane road. The center line is broken on your side. You check ahead — the road is straight and clear for at least a quarter mile. You signal, pass quickly, and return to your lane when you see the tractor in your rearview mirror.
💡 A car starts to pass you on a two-lane road. You see oncoming traffic approaching. You slow down to let the passing car complete the pass more quickly and get back to their lane safely.
Common Mistakes
⚠ Passing on a curve or hill where you can't see ahead — head-on collisions happen this way.
⚠ Cutting back into the lane too soon after passing — wait until you see the vehicle in your rearview mirror.
⚠ Speeding up when someone is passing you — this is illegal and dangerous.
Key Takeaways
✔ Pass only on the left, only when the line is broken on your side.
✔ You need at least 1/3 mile of clear road ahead to pass safely.
✔ Return to your lane when you see the passed car in your rearview mirror.
✔ Never pass on hills, curves, intersections, or in no-passing zones.
