Lane Usage & Turns

Lesson 2

Making Turns and U-Turns

Turns are where many crashes happen. Signal early, position correctly, and check for pedestrians — every time.

Signaling

Florida law requires you to signal at least 100 feet before turning in a city or town. On highways, signal even earlier — at least 300 feet at highway speeds gives other drivers time to react. Always signal before you brake for the turn, so following drivers know why you're slowing down.

Right Turns

To make a right turn: move into the right lane or as close to the right curb as possible. Signal at least 100 feet before the turn. Slow down. Check for pedestrians and bicyclists on your right. Turn into the closest right lane of the road you are entering. Do not swing wide into the left lane while turning right.

Left Turns

To make a left turn: move into the left lane or center turn lane. Signal at least 100 feet ahead. Yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. When clear, turn left into the closest left lane of the road you are entering. On a two-way road, make sure you end up on the right side of the road you're turning onto.

U-Turns

U-turns are legal in Florida unless a sign says "NO U-TURN." You may make a U-turn at an intersection with a green light or green arrow, as long as no sign prohibits it. You must be able to see clearly in both directions — at least 500 feet. You may NOT make a U-turn on a curve, near the top of a hill, or anywhere you can't see approaching traffic. Never make a U-turn in a school zone.

Real World Examples
💡 You need to turn right at the next intersection. 150 feet before the turn, you signal. You check your right mirror and blind spot for bicyclists. You slow down, check for pedestrians in the crosswalk, and turn into the right lane. Clean and safe.
💡 You missed your turn and want to make a U-turn. There's no "NO U-TURN" sign. You can see more than 500 feet in both directions. You wait for all traffic to clear and make a safe U-turn.
Common Mistakes
⚠ Signaling too late — other drivers need time to react to your signal.
⚠ Turning right from the left lane or left from the right lane — this is called a "wide turn" and is dangerous.
⚠ Making a U-turn where you can't see far enough — you need 500 feet of visibility.
