Introduction to Florida Driving

Lesson 1

Getting Your Florida Learner's Permit

Before you touch a steering wheel in Florida, you need a piece of plastic that says you're allowed to learn.

What Is a Learner's Permit?

A learner's permit is a temporary license that lets you practice driving. In Florida, it is called a Class E learner's permit. You must have it with you every time you drive. You cannot drive alone — a licensed driver age 21 or older must sit in the front passenger seat.

Who Can Apply?

You must be at least 15 years old. If you are under 18, you need a parent or guardian to sign for you. You must bring proof of identity, Social Security number, and two proofs of residential address. Non-US citizens can use a passport and I-94 form.

The Knowledge Exam

The written exam has 50 questions about road signs and traffic laws. You need 40 correct answers to pass (80%). You can take the exam at any DHSMV office or at an authorized third-party provider. The test is available in English and several other languages.

After You Pass

Once you pass the exam and vision test, you get your permit. Permits are valid for one year. You must hold it for at least 12 months before you can take the driving skills test. During that time, practice as much as possible with a licensed adult.

Real World Examples
💡 When you go to the DHSMV office, bring ALL your documents. If you forget even one, you will be turned away and have to come back another day.
💡 Many people fail the knowledge exam the first time because they only study road signs and skip the traffic law questions. Study both equally.
Common Mistakes
⚠ Driving with a learner's permit without a licensed adult in the front seat — this is illegal and can result in a ticket.
⚠ Thinking a permit from another state automatically works in Florida — you may need to apply for a Florida permit.
