Introduction to Florida Driving

Lesson 3

Florida Road System Basics

Florida has over 122,000 miles of roads. Knowing how they're organized will help you navigate like a local.

Types of Florida Roads

Florida has four main types of roads. Interstates (like I-95 and I-75) are the fastest, with no traffic lights and multiple lanes. US Highways (like US-1) are major roads that connect cities. State Roads (like SR-826) are regional roads. Local streets are the smaller roads in neighborhoods and towns.

The Numbering System

Road numbers tell you which direction they go. Even-numbered roads (like I-4, US-90) generally run east to west. Odd-numbered roads (like I-95, US-1) generally run north to south. This is the same system used across the entire United States.

Toll Roads

Florida has many toll roads, like the Florida Turnpike and expressways in Orlando, Tampa, and Miami. Most tolls are collected electronically with a SunPass or E-PASS transponder. Some toll plazas also accept cash, but many are now "all-electronic" with no cash option.

Speed and Safety

Different roads have different speed limits. Residential areas are usually 30 mph. Main roads in cities are 35-45 mph. Highways are 55-70 mph. Always watch for posted speed limit signs because they can change quickly.

Real World Examples
💡 You're looking at a map and see I-75. Because 75 is odd, you know it runs north-south. It goes from Miami all the way up to Michigan.
💡 You're driving on the Florida Turnpike and don't have SunPass. The camera takes a photo of your license plate and you get a toll bill in the mail — usually with an extra fee.
Common Mistakes
⚠ Getting on a toll road without a SunPass and being surprised by a bill in the mail with late fees.
⚠ Assuming all highways have the same speed limit — always check the posted signs.
